IIS co-organizes International conference "UNESCO between two Phases of the World Summit on the Information Society"

An International Conference “UNESCO between two Phases of the World Summit on the Information Society” will be held on May 17-19, 2005 in Saint-Petersburg (Russian Federation) under the auspices of UNESCO.

The idea of holding this event in Russia was expressed on 25 November 2003 at the meeting of the High Council for Culture and Art under the President of the Russian Federation, and it was supported by President Putin and Koichiro Matsuura, UNESCO Director-General. The conference is organized with a view to clarify the next steps and key decisions of UNESCO with regard to the creation of the global information society.

This event is Russia’s contribution to the preparation for the World Summit on the Information Society in El-Tunis and the WSIS Executive secretariat has accorded this conference the status of "WSIS Thematic Meeting".

The conference is organized with a view to clarify the next steps and key decisions of UNESCO with regard to the creation of the global information society.

The conference welcomes representatives of intergovernmental and international non-governmental organizations, public authorities in the sphere of culture, education, science, information and communications; representatives from business, civil society, research and education community, mass media; political and public figures, and leading experts.

The main organizers of the conference are: Ministry of Culture and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Russian Committee of the UNESCO Program “Information for All”, UNESCO, Institute of the Information Society, and Center of Informatization in the Sphere of Culture.

The conference will discuss the following issues:

  1. Transition to the Information Society and Knowledge Society: concepts, strategies and programs.
  2. Capacity Building for Knowledge Societies. Information Culture of Individual.
  3. Education in Knowledge Societies.
  4. Science and Innovations in Knowledge Societies.
  5. Universal Access to Public Domain Information.
  6. Cultural Diversity in Cyberspace.
  7. Development of Communications and Freedom of Expression.
  8. Business Environment for Knowledge Societies.
  9. Stakeholders’ Partnership and Cooperation to Foster Information Society Development.
  10. Information Society Technologies for Knowledge Societies.
  11. Policies of cultural and scientific heritage digitization and preservation.

The conference covers plenary sessions, thematic meetings, sections, round tables, forums and seminars.

One of the main objects set by the conference is drafting recommendations for determining UNESCO’s position on further implementation of provisions of the main documents adopted at the World Summit on the Information Society.

The results of the conference will be published in Russian and English.

The working languages of the conference are Russian and English. Simultaneous and consecutive translation will be provided throughout the conference.

TERMS OF PARTICIPATION:

Participation in workshops, round-tables, cultural program and conference and information materials are free of charge.

To register please fill in the Application for Participation form on the above web-site not later than:

  • April 30, 2005 - for Russian participants;
  • April 15 2005 - for participants from other countries.

The Organizing Committee will make its final decision on the list of participants and send out official invitations as well as post the list of invited participants on the conference web-site:

  • Not later than May 05, 2005 - for Russian participants;
  • Not later than April 20, 2005 - for participants from other countries.

The Organizing Committee will provide visa support, assistance in hotel reservation and airport-hotel-airport transfer.

Applications for presentations are to submit via the conference web-site.

The Program Committee retains the right to accept/decline the application and to determine the status of presentation (plenary session, thematic meeting, workshop presentation, etc.).
