IIS has professional expertise in scientific and research activities, analysis and consulting, legislative, publishing and educational activities in a vast range of topics related to the information society and knowledge economy development, as well as performing research and development works and system integration in the field of advanced information technologies creation including design and implementation of ICT solutions from the infrastructure up to the applied expert systems level.

For the years of operation IIS was engaged in fulfilling orders of federal and regional public authorities, as well as federal scientific foundations. The partners and customers of the Institute are large commercial companies, state unitary enterprises, government agencies, universities, research institutes (including RAS system ones), non-profit and international organizations.

IIS has implemented a number of serious conceptual and methodological developments of national and international significance.

Besides that the Institute has an immense experience in developing, implementing and evaluating projects related to e-development of Russian regions. Analytical reports on e-readiness assessment of Russia and its regions, which have been regularly prepared since 2001, should be mentioned among the most significant outcomes of IIS work.

In total, by September 2017 the Institute has organized and conducted 110 events at the regional, national and international levels, published over 30 books on a number of topics related to the information society development.

Since 1999 jointly with the Russian Engineering Academy the Institute has been the founder and publisher of the scientific and analytical journal "Information Society" - the only Russian publication dealing with the challenges of the information society in a multifaceted and systematic way. In 2010 the journal was included in the list of leading peer-reviewed scientific journals and publications approved by the Higher Attestation Commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, and in 2015 confirmed its status.

IIS actively cooperates with international organizations and is involved in a number of international initiatives promoting the use of ICT for inclusive development, including the Global Alliance on ICT for Development, the United Nations Public Administration Network, the World Summit on the Information Society forums, the joint expert group “E-participation: empowering people through ICT”, established at the initiative of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

Currently, the Institute unites people of different professions, ages and nationalities. They represent a powerful intellectual and creative team of fellow thinkers, owing to which IIS has overcome all difficulties and become an “expert of first choice” and an independent leader in Russia in the field of the information society development.
