It was announced that WSIS+10
High-Level Event is scheduled
to be held from the 13 to 16 June
2014 in Geneva. This event will be an extended
version of the WSIS Forum. It is designed to review the progress made in the
implementation of the WSIS outcomes under the mandates of participating
agencies, and to take stock of achievements in the last 10 years based on
reports of WSIS Stakeholders, including those submitted by countries, Action
Line Facilitators and other stakeholders. The WSIS+10 High-Level Event will
review the WSIS Outcomes (2003 and 2005) related to the WSIS Action Lines with the
view of developing proposals on a new vision beyond 2015, potentially including
new targets. This process will take into account the decisions of the 68th of the UN General Assembly
(UNGA).
This event is preceded by several phases of preparatory process:
- Phase One: July 2013 – Initiation of the Open Consultation Process: stakeholders were invited to submit inputs for the Draft Outcome Documents and proposals on themes & innovative approaches at the Event
- Phase Two: 7-8 October 2013 – First Physical Meeting (with remote participation facilities)
- Phase Three: 16-17 December 2013 – Second Physical Meeting (with remote participation facilities)
- Phase Four: 17-18 February 2014 – Third Physical Meeting (with remote participation facilities)
- Phase Five: 14-17 April 2014 – Fourth Physical Meeting, outcomes of the open consultation published on the website.
The preparatory process is an open and inclusive consultation
among WSIS Stakeholders (governments, private sector, civil society,
international organizations and relevant regional organizations) focused on
developing multistakeholder consensus on two draft Outcome Documents, the
thematic aspects, and innovations on the format of the Event. The two draft Outcome
Documents, to be developed and submitted for consideration by the WSIS+10
High-Level Event are:
The Fourth Physical Meeting is chaired by Professor Vladimir Minkin, Chief Research Fellow of Federal State Unitary Enterprise Radio Research and Development Institute, Chairman of the Information Society Workgroup of the Council of the International Telecommunication Union, Chairman of the Telecommunication Development Advisory Group of the Development Sector of ITU (ITU-D), Chairman of the ITU Cooperation Workgroup of the Commission of the Regional Commonwealth in the Field of Communications for Coordination of International Cooperation. The opening remarks were delivered by Mr. Brahima Sanou, Director of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau.
