Strategy for Information Society Development in Russia
PRIOR Directorate of IIS organized round table on journalism in the Information Society

Department of Journalism of the Lomonosov Moscow State University and IIS organized the round table "Journalism in the Information Society: New Opportunities and New Challenges". Foreign Trade Bank of RF and Russian e-Development Foundation provided support for the event

Progress of ICT is shaping the modern world. Networked economy and ICT production become the key sectors of economy. Penetration of ICT in politics, culture, education, production and governance considerably influences socio-economic development of the society. On the other hand, large volumes of information are penetrating modern societies, and become less and less controllable and manageable, while infinite possibilities of transforming and changing information by digital technologies create problems in the sphere of information security and copyright protection.

Unfortunately, in many countries throughout the world (including Russia and other CIS countries) citizens and decision makers are poorly informed of the enormous opportunities provided by using information and knowledge for full-fledged development, and of new problems raised by the Information Society. In this situation the role of mass media increases dramatically, as they can contribute to raising awareness in the society, promoting new possibilities and discussing urgent problems.

The round table had the following objectives:

  • Increasing the level of awareness among the leading media and independent journalists of their role in creating the Information Society and providing Russia s and other CIS countries competitiveness in the globalized economy;
  • Involving the leading media as a stakeholder in the development of the Information Society.

Representatives of the following Russian mas media participated in the discussion: TV-Center, Nezavisimaya Gazeta (The Independent), newspaper "Ekonomika i Zhizn" (Economy and Life), REN TV, Information Society Journal, Uchitelskaya Gazeta (Teacher's Newspaper), broadcasting company Golos Rossii (Voice of Russia), Literaturnaya Gazeta (Literary Newspaper), Novaya Gazeta (New Newspaper), broadcasting company Mayak (Leading Light), Regnum Information Agency. Experts, who provided comments and answered the participants' questions, represented the following organizations: Department of Journalism of MSU; Foreign Trade Bank of RF; Center for Russian-Finnish Studies of Journalism, Mass Communications and Culture; Institute of Socio-Economic Problems of Population of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Free Russian-German Institute of Publicism of MSU; Foundation for IT Support in Aircraft and Space Industry; Institute of the Information Society; New Strategies Analytical Agency; Institute of System Analysis of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Institute of History of Science and Engineering of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Materials of the round table will be published in the nearest future. It is also planned to publish a brochure in Russian and English in early 2005.
